Many common fungi and bacteria and a few microscopic parasites do not ordinarily cause infections in healthy people. But such ordinarily harmless organisms can produce severe, life-threatening and hard-to-control infections in cancer patients by taking advantage of the reduced immune response resulting from the disease or therapy.
